Why 12 oz does not equal one fixed pouch size

The 12 oz claim tells the buyer how much coffee is inside. It does not define the bag's internal volume or outside dimensions. Light-roast whole beans can occupy more space than denser coffee, and ground coffee settles differently from whole beans. The same 340g fill can therefore reach a different height in two otherwise identical pouches.

Pouch construction changes the usable volume as well. A flat-bottom bag opens into a box-like shape, a stand-up pouch expands through its rounded bottom gusset, and a side-gusset bag gains volume through vertical folds. Material stiffness, zipper location, seal width, and how the bag is packed all affect the final result.

How to read 12 oz coffee bag dimensions

For buyers, the clearest format is width × depth × height. For example, write 125 mm W × 80 mm D × 230 mm H, followed by the inch conversion if your market uses inches. This describes the finished pouch more clearly than a factory-only notation such as 125 × 230 + 80 mm.

Factory notation can still be useful, but it must be defined. The gusset number may describe the full formed depth, one folded panel, or two side folds depending on the bag style and supplier. Ask for a dimensioned drawing that labels the finished width, finished depth, overall height, zipper line, tear notch, valve center, seal areas, and artwork safe zone.

Compare flat-bottom, stand-up, and side-gusset formats

Flat-bottom pouches offer a stable base, broad front and back panels, and clean side panels for branding. Stand-up pouches are a familiar flexible-packaging format and often use a wider front face with a bottom gusset. Side-gusset bags create the tall, traditional silhouette used by many roasters and may use a tin tie, adhesive closure, or heat seal.

Do not select the format from the stated ounce capacity alone. Compare the filled shelf profile, available print panels, closure workflow, valve location, packing speed, case fit, and the way customers will open and reclose the bag.

Plan headspace for the zipper, top seal, and valve

A pouch needs functional space above the coffee. The zipper must close without beans trapped in its tracks, the top seal must remain clean, and the tear notch must open without cutting into the zipper. If the fill rises too high, the nominally correct bag can still fail in daily packing.

Place the one-way degassing valve in the upper headspace and away from side seams, the zipper, and the final heat-seal area. Confirm its center position on the dieline and on a formed sample. Artwork should keep essential text and fine details away from the valve opening and all folds or seals.

Run a real 340g filled-pouch test

Use the actual coffee whenever possible. Weigh 340g, fill the pouch using the planned production method, settle it consistently, close the zipper, and make the top seal. Then check the filled height, headspace, valve position, seal cleanliness, base stability, front-panel shape, and ease of opening and reclosing.

If you sell both whole-bean and ground coffee, or both light and dark roasts, test the highest-volume combination rather than assuming one result covers every SKU. Record the coffee type, roast, grind, filled dimensions, and packing method so the approved result can be repeated by the factory and packing team.

Approve the pouch geometry before final artwork

Artwork is applied to flat film, but customers see a filled three-dimensional package. Important elements can move onto folds, wrap around corners, or sit too close to the zipper, valve, and seal bands when the pouch is formed.

Lock the bag structure and filled-pouch test first. Then use the final factory dieline for artwork, maintain the specified bleed and safe zones, and request a digital proof or physical printed sample when color, panel alignment, or valve placement is critical.

Check carton fit and DDP delivery

The unfilled bag size is not enough for shipping planning. Filled bags become thicker and may bulge differently by format, so case quantity and carton dimensions should be based on a realistic packing pattern. Check whether the pouch is packed upright, laid flat, or alternated inside the carton.

Run a carton test with the intended number of filled bags and inspect compression, zipper pressure, scuffing, and presentation after handling. Accurate carton dimensions, gross weight, delivery ZIP code, and destination country also make a door-to-door freight quote more reliable.
